For those that don't know me my name is Evo, not demon smurf.
I started b.boy'in back in 1982 when I was 12 years old. I live in a small town
outside Manchester, England. My first recollection of b.boy'in, or Break dancing
as it was known at the time in the U.K. was probably the Rocksteady's, Hey you
video. This wasn't what got me started though, At that time I was a Mod and
mainly listened to Ska, until one day I put some headphones on, and put one of
my older brothers tapes on labeled Funk/Electro. About half way through the tape
a beat kicked in and I just new I had to move to it. The beat was Apache and it
still moves me today as it did then. That was the beginning for me, from then on
I was hooked. One day an older guy from around my, spotted me doing windmills on
the grass outside my house and suggested traveling to a shopping center out of
town to Battle other dancers. From then on I started traveling to jam's, meeting
other b.boy's and b.girls in and around the Manchester area. As my skills and
style improved I moved from crew to crew until I wore the Street Machine
colors. Street Machine at the time, were well advanced in there style and
skills, most of us were young kids who were full of confidence and with this we
would intimidate whoever would be in front of us. Around 1986/87 the whole scene
in and around Manchester seemed to just disappear over night, or so it seemed.
Between 1987 and 1991 I danced now and then when the chance came. Living in a
small town and not knowing the scene was still active was the only reason why I
was not fully active. Then in 91 a friend brought an article from a Hip Hop
magazine, showing some active b.boys near me. I contacted them and we met, I
checked out video footage they had, which at the time was mainly Battle squad,
Second to none and The b.boy all-stars. I new straight away I could compete on
the same level as these guys. Between then and now I've traveled the world
meeting some incredible b.boys and b.girls and I've been lucky to perform in
some dope places. The highlight of my b.boy life, to date was performing in
front of over 14,000 in my home town with my good friends Archie, Brian and Tuff
Tim on the Prodigy's The Fat Of The Land tour. The future, for me consists
of, staying active, releasing a video and looking for inspiration from the
new styles and skills that continue to show through every year.
PEACE.....
